VJBL Referees Points of Emphasis

  • Illegal contact will be called a foul, incidental contact will not be penalised.
    • All contact at U12 - U14 must be called, no advantage at this age group.  Get the first one and don't let the level of contact escalate.
    • Contact on a player shooting is a foul.  No if buts or maybes.

    • Contact on the dribbler from behind or the side is a foul.
    • If there is a block / charge situation, referees are encouraged to make a call not let it roll because you are unsure.  If you are unsure as to who caused the contact a charging foul should be called.  In this situation any call is better than no call as this escalates the level of contact allowed.
    • Travelling violations will be called at all levels.
    • Players and coaches communicating with referees will be in a courteous and respectful manner.  Referees will address all participants in a respectful manner.
    • Referees are not to put up with spectator abuse.  Go to the coach and speak to him if no change go to the supervisor of the venue and have them removed.
    • Time outs are only one (1) minute in duration with a whistle with 10 seconds remaining.
