Vic Champions Crowned
Victorian junior basketball fans were treated to an awesome display of basketball on Friday evening at the Victorian Championship Grand Finals.
In excess of 2000 spectators filled the stands at MSAC to see 12 closely contested games battled out across all 5 age groups.
On the girls side, Bulleen were very impressive, claiming two titles in both the U12 and U14 age groups. Melbourne rounded off their strong season taking away both the U16 and U18 titles. The U20 girls final was very tight between Diamond Valley and Kilsyth, the game was close right the way through with Diamond Valley getting there in the end, winning by 7 points.
“It was an awesome night of basketball, we saw a number of games go right down to the wire.” VJBL Chairman Niall Quinn said, “It was great to see such a large spread of Associations battling it out for the coveted VC Championship. MSAC was bursting at the seams, it was great to see such a large amount of people come out to see some great games, the best junior basketball this state has to offer."
The boys grades produced a couple of real nail biters. There was not a spare set within view of the U18 boys game between Melbourne and Waverley. The lead changed hands many times throughout the game but it was Waverley who sunk the winning basketball, taking the Championship 62-60.
Games went live on the net with full live stats recorded and displayed on vjbl.com.au. “Live Stats was an added feature for the VC finals this year, it enabled all of those basketball fans who were unable to get out to the game to follow online” Quinn said.
